ABSTRACT

There are two types of epithelial tissue: surface epithelium and glandular epithelium. This chapter describes the different subtypes of surface epithelium, the covering and lining membranes of the body: simple (squamous, cuboidal, and columnar) and stratified. Special types of epithelium such as the pseudostratified columnar (observed in the respiratory and the genital systems) or the transitional epithelium (urothelium, observed in the urinary tract) are also described. The glandular epithelia are described, forming both exocrine and endocrine glands. Finally, a description of the myoepithelium and its presence in modified glands in non-mammalian species is included.
