ABSTRACT

Chapter 9 begins Part 3, planning and growing. The chapter begins with considerations for careers and career progression, including dimensions of career planning and progression, such as duration of planning cycle, depth and breadth of expertise, theoretical and applied expertise, academic and industry orientation, managerial and technical orientation, and size of organization. The chapter continues with a section on coaches, mentors, coaching, and mentoring, and then a section on continued learning. The importance of being able to learn from routine experiences on the job is emphasized. The chapter concludes with practical advice for putting the principles into practice along with real-world experiences of the author. A key theme of the chapter is that while career planning is important, we need to appreciate that for many of us, much of what happens in our careers will not be closely tied to some grand plan, many things are unpredictable, and we need to be ready for, and to embrace, this element of our careers.
