ABSTRACT

Lubricants are of two categories; one is in liquid form called lube oil which is mainly used in automobiles and industrial machines, but there is another category of lubricant which is in solid form called grease where a part of base is used and the rest of it is some solid soap like constituent(s) along with minor quantities of additive(s); these greases are used in low speed machines or in the low speed part(s) of the machines where lube oil concentration requirement is less. There are various classes and grades of greases as standardized internally which are discussed in this section along with their specific commercial applications. As the grease compositions are to some extent different to those of lube oils, these are also discussed in detail in this chapter. The manufacturing processes for lubricant and greases are simple, viz. these are basically physical blending processes; however, the manufacturing processes are also discussed to get an idea.
