ABSTRACT

The science of complexity has made an important contribution toward the understanding of technology and its innovation. In this chapter, we explain how concepts, processes and models of the science of complexity may be helpful for this understanding. Explanations start with the difference among simple, complicated and complex systems. Further, an explanation of the various concepts, used in technology dynamics, and the types of complex systems, i.e. chaotic systems, auto-organized critical systems, complex adaptive systems and network systems used are provided. It is followed by the description of processes such as the phase transition with the autocatalytic processes and the cycles. Further a description of models of the science of complexity and interesting technology, i.e. the small world model, the NK model, the fitness landscape and the models of the complex adaptive systems is provided. The chapter is concluded by describing the relation between the stages of the technology innovation process and the science of complexity, followed by an explanation of the importance of complexity in the evolution of technology.
