ABSTRACT

While keeping active inventory is usually more of a concern for the tabletop games space, it can come up with indie developers as well. Some older gamers prefer the nostalgic feel of boxed games and the awareness that they always have a copy in case your digital catalog gets pulled from a distributor. Selling swag like T-shirts, plushies, keychains, and figurines has also been through some evolutions: studios had to take the risk on buying limited runs of these items then see if they sold. Generally, when you use these print-on-demand services, you collect a royalty payment for the merchandise you sell and don’t need to keep an inventory for tax or accounting purposes. Third party merchandisers can put a severe crimp in those plans, and inventory accounting is just going to become an unfortunate reality of your business processes.
