ABSTRACT

This chapter gives a description of various direction of arrival (DoA) estimation algorithms. The Smart Antenna System employs the antenna elements and the digital signal processing which enables it to form a beam to a desired direction taking into account the multipath signal components. The chapter evaluates the performance of Bartlett, Capon, MUltiple SIgnal Classification (MUSIC), Estimation of Signal Parameters via Rotational Invariance Technique and root-MUSIC under different sets of environment such as number of array elements, user space distribution that is narrow angular separation, wide angular separation and combination of wide and narrow angular separation, number of snapshots, signal-to-noise ratio. If one wants reliability and accuracy in DoA estimation, the recommended choice would be MUSIC algorithm, as it showed superior performance by all criteria of comparison and in all environment conditions. These results may help when selecting tools for user’s separation in cognitive radio context, in space division multiple access techniques and other smart antenna system designs and applications.
