ABSTRACT
Translating from one dialect to another is tricky enough; translating from one related language to another is fraught with error; and translating between two non-related languages may not even be possible. In this chapter, we consider some of the problems with translation, along with some of the possibilities for improving upon existing methods. We then address functional means of assessing the efficacy and accuracy of translation, with various amounts of human intervention in the process. We end up introducing the concept of “acceptable substitution” as a functional replacement for direct translation.
