ABSTRACT

Melody is the musical element that deals with the horizontal presentation of pitch, it is a series of sounds with different intensities, pitches, and durations, that succeed each other in time, with a musical sense. The motif, or motive, is the fundamental element of the musical composition, and consists of a short melodic design formed by two or more notes. The theme is the melodic idea used as the basis of development. It is also the main self-contained melody of a musical composition. A phrase is a small musical unit, a sub-section of a melody, equivalent to a grammatical phrase in a sentence, a substantial musical thought, which ends with a musical punctuation known as cadence. The cadence is a sort of musical punctuation, that varies in conclusiveness, such as, the comma, the semi-colon, the colon, and the period in language.
