ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with applications of Fourier transform to the analysis of sound and music parameters. The properties of Fourier transform are presented, along with the main properties of signal and system analysis. Signal analysis is an important tool to understand music, and to know the sound captured by a set of microphones is sampled, quantized, and digitized, to be stored in a compact disc (CD), or to be sent over the Internet. An impulse can model a sudden electrostatic discharge, such as the lightning that occurs during a thunderstorm. The exponential function is also useful to model the latency in computer networks, the probability distribution of letters in an alphabet, and the arrival of phone calls in a telephone system. Since both the sine and the cosine functions are periodic functions, they do not satisfy the condition of absolute integrability.
