ABSTRACT

Technology standardization takes the given solution to global market. Standardization also gives choice to customers to buy products from different vendors that can communicate/work with each other. Thus standardization gives choice to customers, drives cost down while giving global reach to the vendors. This chapter presents the details of standardization in these two bodies: Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX). 3GPP is a body for developing technical specifications and reports for mobile communications systems. The chapter briefly presents the standardization process of 3GPP and also explains the network architecture of 3GPP as it has evolved. The WiMAX technology has continuously been evolved based on the dominant use cases and scenarios from both marketing and technology perspectives. From the security perspective, the WiMAX system offers relatively stronger security functions. WiMAX security is handled at multiple layers of the network.
