ABSTRACT

The society and the stakeholders of a company play a key role in Corporate social responsibility (CSR), as companies can no longer act as isolated business silos. The concept “social” in CSR has always been difficult to define and has lacked direction as to who the company is actually responsible for. Stakeholder management or management for/of stakeholders has therefore become a key issue in effective facilitation and management of sustainable businesses. Society’s increasing attention of businesses’ social responsibility implies that companies can no longer hide or get away with greenwashing. Global, sustainable cooperations are therefore also about developing and strengthening the suppliers and their subcontractors through dialogue, knowledge dissemination, and education. Sustainable, global collaborations are not about philanthropy as few companies can survive doing this. An interesting business development that is already visible in practice now is the growth and combinations of sustainable and unsustainable businesses integrated under one corporate umbrella.
