ABSTRACT

This chapter goes through a different holistic approach, from local to a regional and global scale, to figure out in what extension the urban forests can operate, in line with the emergence of “global city”. It evaluates the hypothesis of “global forest” based on the urbanization process in a holistic vision of global issues. During the 20th century, holism gives birth to novel precursors of greening; Green Belt of London, Green infrastructure, Ecological Network in northern EU countries, Green System in Balkan area, Green Way in North America, Biodiversity Corridors in the Philippines, and Urban Greening in Singapore. These are heterogeneous terminology to define the integrity and connection of these green structures that create a whole, and the urban forests are a part. Greenbelt, Greenway, Green Infrastructure, and Ecological Network evolution is the main concern of this section to point out the primary directive and challenge that these holistic approaches have encountered.
