ABSTRACT

The consumption of a sensor node is commonly dominated by the consumption of its radio, and lowering the consumption of a radio remains the biggest challenge of the IoT. At the same time, as the number of devices continues to grow, other issues will appear: the increasing number of interferers, scalability problems and latency, to name a few. This chapter proposes FM-UWB as a solution to all of these needs. The FM-UWB receiver simply cannot achieve the same sensitivity for a given power consumption, but it brings other benefits to the table. The chapter focuses on the implementation of an ultra low power FM-UWB transceiver. The design process started with the exploration of options and capabilities of the FM-UWB modulation.
