ABSTRACT

Logic is the basis of all mathematics, indeed of all organized human thought, though it is often lacking in human affairs. Lateral thinking is smart logic, quick logic, compact logic and logic with all of the unnecessary steps left out. Many classical problems and puzzles involve everyday logic which can serve as a bridge to mathematics and it is amazing when we eliminate mathematical symbols and language how logical the average person can be. Furthermore, people really enjoy the process of using their brain to think logically. Hence the popularity of detective stories, mysteries, police dramas and forensic documentaries, the staple content of books, films and television.

There are deep and difficult questions in logic which impinge on the foundations of mathematics, namely set theory. One of these is what is known as Russell's paradox, involving the set of all sets which do not contain themselves as members. These concepts can be very confusing mentally but also very stimulating intellectually. Lateral thinking can help guide a person through this maze and afterwards amaze and amuse friends.
