ABSTRACT
A research vessel (RV or R/V) is a ship or boat designed, modified, or equipped to conduct research at sea. Research vessels conduct several roles. Some of these roles can be combined into a single vessel, but others require a dedicated vessel. In this chapter, we will examine the development of the research vessel from the mid-18th century to the present day, as well as the role and function of different types of research vessels.
