ABSTRACT

Lead is one of the most important toxic heavy elements in nature. Owing to its important physico-chemical properties, it has been used since ancient times. Globally, it is a widely distributed, important, yet hazardous environmental heavy metal. The effect of lead toxicity on the human body is overwhelming. On account of its constant use, its levels are increasing everywhere, posing serious threats to the environment and life. Human exposure to lead and its compounds occurs mainly in lead-related occupations. This chapter discusses the sources and route of exposure of lead, aetiology, pathophysiology, and clinical manifestations, mechanism of lead toxicity, and toxicological effects of lead.
