ABSTRACT

Multiple cropping is a practice of getting maximum production from a unit area in a certain time span. It is a philosophy of maximum crop production per unit area of land, can be achieved by by crop rotations, relay cropping, mixed cropping, inter cropping etc. Global population is increasing day by day. However, Land resources are limited and to feed this increasing population, agricultural lands will have to be utilized to the best of its capacities. The oldest established measure of the yield advantage of crop mixtures is the relative yield total (RYT) index was designed as a measure of the extent to which various crops components shared common resources, rather than as a direct measure of yield advantage. The main difference between LER and RYT is in interpretation, rather than expression, since LER is considered as a measure of the efficiency of grain or economic yield production of the crop mixture, compared with sole crops, based on land use.
