ABSTRACT

The world population is growing, and by 2050, almost 70% of people will live in urban areas, bringing with it numerous challenges such as housing, waste treatment, and carbon emissions. To address these issues, sustainable urban development is crucial. Smart cities, characterized by interconnectivity and the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), have emerged as a solution to achieve sustainability and enhance the overall quality of life in urban areas. The implementation of technology in public sectors can provide cost-effective transportation, improved safety, data sharing, and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for optimized outcomes. In this chapter, the topic of smart cities is examined by defining the term and delving into the various components, technologies, and frameworks that make up these urban environments. Additionally, the chapter looks at the potential social impact of smart cities, as well as providing an overview of recent developments and initiatives in the field.
