ABSTRACT

Blockchain technology has the potential to revolutionize various industries, including smart cities, by enabling secure and transparent transactions. Smart cities can benefit from improved communication and coordination among city departments and citizens, more efficient and secure management of assets, and new economic opportunities through decentralized applications. Dubai and Singapore are prime examples of successful implementation of blockchain technology in smart cities, where it has improved efficiency and reduced costs in government services, shipping container management, and digital payments. However, challenges such as scalability, interoperability, regulation, security, adoption, and power consumption remain. This chapter discusses the application of blockchain technology in smart cities and highlights the open challenges.
