ABSTRACT

Mobile wireless communications has been one the fastest growing technologies in the last decade. This chapter discusses the past, present and future state of mobile communications, with primary focus on cellular networks. Wireless communications were attempted as early as in the 1860s by Mahlon Loomis in the United States. In the present age, wireless communications capture the attention of a wide variety of researchers around the globe. It is almost impossible to keep track of the technical journals, magazines, symposiums and articles concerning this subject. The mobile communications evolution till date can be broadly classified as first generation, second generation and third generation mobile systems. A core interface lies in between the core network and radio access networks, and a collection of radio interfaces is used for communication between radio access networks and mobile users.
