ABSTRACT

A good measurement of safety management performance is the information derived concerning the health and safety culture (climate, attitude, and opinion) of the organization obtained by a formal safety perception survey. Sometimes referred to as a safety culture survey. A perception survey is a tool intended to drive continuous improvement and should not be considered a silver bullet.

A safety perception survey provides a quantitative measure of how employees feel about current safety policies and procedures and provides them an opportunity to share their recommendations for improvement. It is facilitated by asking all employees to answer questions on a questionnaire openly and honestly. A safety perception survey allows an organization to better understand how its employees perceive health and safety, and the organization's approach to health and safety management.

Good feedback from the survey provides employees with a general, nontechnical explanation of the findings, which include a summary of any changes to be implemented as a result of the findings, and a chance to express any concerns or questions about the survey process or the results.
