ABSTRACT
The chapter outlines the concept of Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) which is being promoted by the UK Government as a means of achieving the housing targets set for the twenty-first century. However, inertia by the building industry to move towards innovative construction processes, including off-site factory production, is noted. The reluctance to modernise is mainly due to a combination of the significant financial outlays required and the industry's natural aversion to risk.
