ABSTRACT

The south-easternmost Italian region occupies a territory completely different from the surrounding regions, such as Molise, Campania and Basilicata: thanks to the “Bradano graben”, the geological characters are marked by a monotonous succession of Mesozoic sedimentary rocks (limestone). The outcrops are quarried in two different sites (Apricena and Trani), both exploiting brownish limestones crossed by several thin reddish veins. The use of these stones in Lombard architecture started in the second half of the 20th century, manly as slab for flooring.
