ABSTRACT

This region of Central Italy occupies a territory of Tertiary sedimentary rocks (east) and of volcanoclastic deposits (west). The centre of this territory features large outcrops of Quaternary white non-clastic sediments (travertine), widely used in the Roman architecture (Colosseum, Theatre of Marcellus, Circus of Domitian, etc.). Sedimentary rocks are represented by Cottanello (used for column shafts) or Coreno (used as slab for flooring); volcanoclastic deposits are represented by Peperino, a kind of black tuff (used as block for foundations). The use in Milan started in the first decades of the 20th century (travertine; blocks, columns) or in the second half of the same century (Peperino or Lavagrigia, slab for cladding).
