ABSTRACT

Approximately, seven tissue types are required to manifest the sexual organ, the basidium or ascogonium - antheridium and maintenance of meiosis. In fungi, these organs are so simple that their parent: progeny ratio is 1: 4. Consequently, they must invest in greater number of reproductive organs to increase the progeny number. Notably, the ratio remains at 1: 2 in the Zygomycota, which engages gametangia as mating types.
