ABSTRACT

Construction hazards and accidents are challenges faced by the industry globally. The rapid growth being experienced in developing nations, particularly those in the Global South, exerts more pressure on the construction industry to deliver on infrastructure demands and create jobs for a sizable portion of the unemployed poor. While all construction workers are faced with the risk of accident occurrence at work, those in developing countries are more predisposed to this challenge than those in developed nations. This chapter describes the safety climate and emphasises challenges faced in its positive promotion on a typical construction site. It further outlines safety climate concepts such as safety performance and compliance, counterproductive work behaviour and organisational citizenship behaviour.
