ABSTRACT

Visible management safety priority in the workplace implies that management engages in safety-related behaviour that shows workers that unsafe behaviour is unacceptable. At the strategic level, safety priority extends beyond documenting and publishing H&S regulations to management ‘walking the talk’. Frontline workers perceive management to be mentors and will readily adopt the behaviour they see in their leaders. Many developing countries in SSA suffer from either an absence of H&S regulations or low levels of enforcement by statutory authorities. This chapter presents empirical findings from two countries in SSA on management safety priority. It emphasises that management visible safety behaviour significantly influences safety-related behaviour among workers in the form of OCB. Thus, managers at all levels must be aware of the significant role they play in the promotion of H&S compliance among frontline workers to achieve a general improvement of safety performance at the workplace.
