ABSTRACT

Trust between management and employees in any workplace contributes to a seamless relationship. Management can be sure that workers will do as expected and workers can also feel confident that management will fulfil their part as agreed. This chapter highlights the role of establishing safety trust in the relationship between management and frontline workers in high-risk workplaces such as the construction industry. It highlights safety distrust and how it can run simultaneously with safety trust in improving safety performance among construction workers. Management must ensure that safety system management runs optimally. The chapter concludes that the role of effective safety leadership, commitment and priority cannot be overemphasised in the establishment of safety trust in a construction workplace. Management must ensure that safety trust among workers is sustained so that they can reap the benefits thereof.
