ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various introductory aspects of system safety, maintainability, and maintenance. It covers safety, maintainability, and maintenance history; need for safety, maintainability, and maintenance; terms and definitions; useful sources for obtaining information on safety, maintainability, and maintenance; problems; and references.

In the case of useful sources for obtaining information on safety, maintainability, and maintenance, the chapter lists 19 journals, 15 books, 11 organizations, and 7 data information sources. Also, the chapter presents ten problems to test the reader’s comprehension in the area.

Finally, the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. This will be useful to readers, if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific topic or area.
