ABSTRACT

This chapter presents various important aspects of reliability-centered maintenance (RCM). It covers RCM goals and principles, RCM process, RCM elements, RCM application advantages and reasons for its failures, RCM Program effectiveness measurement indicators, problems, and references. The RCM elements covered are proactive maintenance, preventive maintenance, reactive maintenance, and predictive testing and inspection (PTI). The RCM program effectiveness measurement indicators covered are equipment availability, emergency percentage index, predicative testing and inspection (PTI)-covered equipment index, maintenance overtime percentage index, preventive maintenance (PM)/PTI-reactive maintenance index, and emergency-PM/PTI work index.

The chapter contains ten problems at the end to test the reader’s comprehension in the area. Finally, it is added that the sources of most of the material presented in the chapter are given in its reference section. They will be useful to readers if they desire to delve more deeply into a specific area of interest.
