A reference standard is a specific batch of a substance of known composition and/or purity to which the responses of samples of unknown composition or purity are compared to determine the concentration or purity of that unknown composition.
Different grades of chemicals are available in the market. In the pharmaceutical industry, ACS-grade chemicals are used.
