ABSTRACT

This chapter examines recent developments in the fields of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics. It examines the key intellectual leaps that had to be made before AI could be invented, and discusses the advent of Deep Learning, which uses artificial neural networks to drive both performance and improvement. It looks at the introduction of Reinforcement Learning as a way to ‘train’ AI, and the introduction of ‘Bayesian AI’ which uses uncertainty to improve performance. It concludes by reviewing the Turing Test, the gold standard for assessing whether or not AI can ‘think,’ and concludes that there are now several examples of programmes that seemingly pass this test.
