ABSTRACT

This chapter investigates the design of the soul. It introduces the idea of ‘junk code,’ pointing out that the very attributes that have been excluded from the programming of AI because they appear to be faulty or bad are exactly what we might recognise as evidence of soul. It identifies these elements as emotions, mistakes, storytelling, Sixth Sense, uncertainty, free will, and meaning. Interrogating each of these for their own source code, it is possible to identify a common purpose or goal, which is a design that supports an instinct for community.
