ABSTRACT

This chapter makes the case for extending this courtesy to AI too, by programming the whole of our humanity into it. While there may be religious or strategic reasons for doing so, the chapter argues that there is also a compelling case from the field of Effective Altruism, which argues for priority attention to be given to existential threats that are comparatively neglected but susceptible to solution. The development of increasingly sophisticated AI without these crucial elements of human code is such a risk. The chapter then attempts to speculate about how this kind of soul design might be programmed into AI in order to make it complete. The chapter concludes by setting out a new Robot Manifesto, which not only urges this correction, but proposes the early development of the criteria for legal personhood for AI and a road map towards it.
