ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the lightweight materials that impact on the economy, requirements for ideal automotive materials, classification of materials used in automobiles, different properties of automotive materials, ferrous materials and their alloys, including cast iron and steels, and their types, properties, and applications. It also discusses the material selection process in the automotive Industry and the efficiency and performance of automobiles. The selection of the most material for the specific application is a very complex process which involves a variety of factors, hence material selection basic factors are provided from the learner’s point of view.
