ABSTRACT
Plastics find major application in automobile components and the interior and exterior furnishings. There are many applications of plastics in automobiles ranging from power trains, and under the hood and chassis. Polypropylene (PP) has been widely used in the automobile sector in recent years. Polyurethane (PU), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene (PE) are the major plastics used that have been in great demand in automobile engineering. This chapter provides a basic introduction and highlights the fundamentals of extrusion of plastics, injection moulding (plunger and screw machines), compression moulding, transfer moulding (typical industrial applications), blow moulding, advanced plastics used in the automobile sector, and the usage and advantages of plastic components in the automotive industry.
