ABSTRACT

The first cause of AI bias is rooted in historical human prejudices. Deeply embedded prejudices shape human biases against certain groups of people, and these biases can be amplified within computer models. AI systems thus intake existing biases in areas including healthcare, criminal justice, and education. As such, AI systems that predict the likelihood of future criminal acts would also be biased and discriminatory against Black people, as the AI relies on the systemic racism coded into the data on this group; it will be extremely difficult, if not near impossible, to mitigate this problem because systemic racism is ingrained in so many areas—everything from income to zip codes. The automated decision-making is determined by automated means without any human involvement. AI is widely used for automated decision-making—analyzing massive amounts of data, finding correlations, and making predictions about future outcomes.
