ABSTRACT

According to an investigation by the Human Rights Watch, death squads assassinated street children, drug dealers, and petty criminals; in some cases, researchers found evidence of the conspiracy or direct involvement of government officials and police. Philippine police’s interest in incorporating cutting-edge surveillance into their infrastructure has hardly waned. The Filipino government installed thousands of surveillance cameras across Davao City and metro Manila in collaboration with a Chinese firm. Most major technology companies have gotten out of the facial recognition software business, especially in cases where the technology is used for mass surveillance. Gunshot detection systems like the ShotSpotter use acoustic sensing technology to identify, discriminate, and report gunshots to the police. These reports reach the police within mere seconds of the shot being fired. AI systems have consistently used biological characteristics like fingerprints, DNA, hand geometry, writing signatures, and even heartbeat rhythms to identify a person uniquely.
