ABSTRACT

Examination of the horse or pony with forelimb lameness is a common undertaking in equine practice. Many clinicians find forelimb lameness easier to recognise and work on but, as always in lameness diagnosis, careful history taking, detailed clinical examination, the use of diagnostic analgesia techniques and the appropriate use of imaging modalities are important in allowing an accurate diagnosis to be made in the majority of cases. Some conditions are particular to the type of horse encountered (e.g. young racehorses), but many forelimb conditions are seen in all types of horse.
