ABSTRACT

The world economy’s growing need for energy, together with rising energy and energy carrier prices, has resulted in an increasing interest in renewable energy and the use of renewable energy sources (RES). Renewable energy sources are nowadays an alternative to traditional, primary, non-renewable energy carriers (fossil fuels). RES are replenished by natural processes, which make them practically inexhaustible. An unquestionable advantage of obtaining energy from these sources is the low level of negative impact on the environment. For the development of efficient, sustainable and effective energy based on renewable resources, civic energy is becoming crucial. Success of the green energy transition, however, will depend on the extent to which civic energy is developed and integrated into the transition processes. The chapter also presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
