ABSTRACT

There are many other texts that have been written exclusively on infectious diseases and which focus on these exclusively throughout. This chapter provides an overview of the contributions that bacterial genetics and genomics have made to the control of infectious diseases including expanding our understanding of pathogenesis and evolution of bacteria. The examples presented here are not exhaustive and there are other stories embedded within the book in other chapters as well. Within this chapter the innovations that can be brought to infection control through exploration of bacterial genome sequences will be introduced.
