ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the benefits and limitations of using safety performance indicators in organizations. While safety performance indicators offer valuable data to track trends and allocate resources, they can overlook the complex dynamics of safety. They can lead to unintended consequences such as gaming the system. The chapter advocates for a balanced approach, using safety performance indicators (SPIs) as tools within a comprehensive safety strategy that considers factors beyond mere metrics. Through real-life stories, this chapter provides insights in understanding and improving safety assessment strategies.
