ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the application of Human Factors to the aviation domain. It describes the domain as a system of systems, with numerous complexly interacting actors, elements and regulations that work together to ensure safe and efficient performance. It then introduces the micro, meso and macro levels of systems analysis that are prevalent within the study of Human Factors. An explanation of each of these levels, with respect to the aviation domain in provided. Examples of adverse events and incidents that occurred due to poor design and a lack of awareness for the end-user are presented to highlight the motivation for applying Human Factors to the aviation domain. This sets the scene for the need to incorporate user-centred design methods and principles within the design of future flight deck systems. The chapter concludes with an overview of the structure of the book.
