ABSTRACT

This chapter will detail how the application of different measures and methodologies can facilitate the integration of Human Factors into the developmental lifecycle of new avionic technologies. Selecting the ‘best’ or most suitable method can be a challenge. From a practical point of view, method selection is typically based on four specific criteria: time, cost, expertise and equipment. The intrinsic detail relating to each of these criteria is, however, highly individualistic depending on the company and project. The constraints and the types of methods available will also vary depending on the stage of the design process. This chapter will provide an overview of the different aspects of human performance that can be assessed with Human Factors methods and that are relevant to the aviation domain. It will then go on to provide a summary of some of the key design and evaluation methodologies that have been applied over the course of the aviation projects presented within this book. These methods will also be evaluated to present their benefits alongside their challenges and limitations.
