ABSTRACT

Working with the breeding mare can form an important part of clinical practice, particularly during the spring and early summer months. It is essential that the clinician has a good thorough knowledge of the normal anatomy and physiology of the mare so that they can assist in achieving a healthy and successful pregnancy, and a viable foal. The mare chapter is therefore initially split into sections covering the normal physiology, endocrinology and anatomy of the entire reproductive tract. This is followed by sections describing the methods of examination that can be used in all stages of the reproductive cycle plus how to manipulate this cycle artificially. How the management of the breeding process is achieved is followed by sections on pregnancy in the mare and the complications that can arise. The process of parturition and the complications which can occur, including dystocia, are followed by post parturient events and diseases.
