ABSTRACT

The foal, particularly the neonate, is not a small horse, so it is important for clinicians to understand the differences and incorporate them into their clinical approach. This is highlighted in the sections that cover the clinical examination of the foal, the physiological differences, its normal physical parameters, drug therapy and routine care. Specific conditions of the foal, both in the neonate and the older foal, are covered in detail using the same format of aetiology and pathophysiology, clinical examination findings, differential diagnosis, diagnostic techniques, management and treatment, and prognosis as in the adult sections. The main areas of content lie in the fields of immunodeficiency disorders, neonatal sepsis, prematurity/dysmaturity, neonatal maladjustment syndrome, congenital abnormalities, gastroduodenal ulceration syndrome, umbilical and urinary tract disorders, septic arthritis/osteomyelitis, respiratory disease and diarrhoea.
