ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the policies implemented in several countries, including Japan, India, China, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Australia, New Zealand, and Gulf Countries, to address the issue of plastic pollution. All these nations have demonstrated a strong commitment to combating this problem. From the outset, they have taken steps to ban single-use plastic products such as carrier bags, straws, and cutlery, while ensuring minimal inconvenience to the community. Moreover, these countries have implemented various additional measures concurrently, such as extended producer responsibility (EPR), recycling education, bottle return deposit schemes, and research grants. These initiatives aim to enhance the effectiveness of pollution minimization policies. Encouragingly, most of these countries have received positive responses from their communities, leading to promising trends. Recognizing that combating plastic pollution requires sustained long-term efforts, each country has developed a tailor-made action plan that aligns with the needs and convenience of its communities. In summary, all Asian countries involved have displayed a high level of commitment and enthusiasm in addressing the extensive use of plastic and its associated pollution, with a determination to find comprehensive solutions.
