ABSTRACT

Migration to cloud enable enterprises to focus on their core business functions and innovate faster. The chapter discusses the core aspects of cloud migration. The main business drivers for cloud migration are optimizations related to business, technology, operations and governance and security. The main cloud migration options are replace (in which the entire data and business tiers are migrated to the cloud), partial migration (in which only some of the solution components are migrated to cloud), full migration (in which the entire solution stack is migrated to cloud) and cloudify (in which we build cloud-native components). The main stages involved in the cloud migration are assess stage, design stage and migrate and modernize stage. In the assess phase, we map the business goals to cloud benefits, perform the cloud total cost of ownership (TCO) analysis, business value articulation and application assessment. In the design stage we evaluate and identify the most appropriate cloud migration strategy. We iteratively migrate the applications to cloud during the migrate and modernize stage. The activities in a typical three-year cloud roadmap can be categorized into foundation, modernization and innovation categories. As part of foundation, we assess the migration readiness, setup the cloud foundation components and setup the cloud center of excellence. As part of modernization, we evaluate the migration options through proof of concept (PoC) and iteratively migrate the applications and refactor the applications to use the cloud benefits. As part of innovation we build cloud-native data lake and machine learning capabilities on cloud.
