ABSTRACT

Environmental toxins and pollutants derived from human activities such as factories, agriculture, waste treatment plants, and urban wastewater are becoming more prevalent and harmful, causing negative impacts on human health and earth ecosystems. Custom-developed nanomaterials can be chemically modified, functionalized, and embedded in specific polymers and matrices to create hybrid materials or nanocomposites with specific chemical, physical, and mechanical properties that can be used to develop sustainable, advanced, and innovative environmental remediation products/techniques. Because of their mechanical, physical, and adsorption capabilities, functional nanomaterials (nano-fillers), in combination with organic/inorganic polymeric matrices, can be efficiently used for wastewater treatment by organic compounds, heavy metals, hydrocarbons, and oil/water.
