ABSTRACT

In the cancer field, the developments have been dramatic. To get a cancer diagnosis today is far from as detrimental as it was 40 years ago. Then you had a 60% risk of dying from cancer. Today, the risk is reduced to 30%. The reason is that we today have a much better understanding of the process when a normal cell transforms into a cancer cell. We are much better at diagnosing cancer and, specifically, diagnosing earlier. The treatments for cancer have improved tremendously. Surgery is still one of the more common treatments for cancer, but other methods are becoming more competitive. Methods like targeted therapy, hormone therapy, and immunotherapy are used today together with surgery and radiotherapy. The pipeline of research projects in the field is impressive, and this looks good for the future. All these will be covered in this chapter.
